Attention!!
|
Turtle House is fortunate to be situated in the Oakridges Moraine. We are pleased that the turtles have migrated from the construction areas to a new habitat. The Community has rallied behind us to ensure the safety of these turtles.
Turtles are not to be displaced more than one mile from their
original home. The new construction has taken more than one mile of
their original location. Red Eared Sliders are not included (pet
shop turtles).
We are pleased as turtle rescuers to be stopped where ever we go by
people conveying their stories of turtle rescues. We encourage you
to relate your story and we will post them on our website.
Turtle House apologizes for the late update of our website. Turtleman had a stroke and heart attack all in one year. He is on the trail to recovery. And has been fortunate to have his reptiles to help in his recovery. We have expanded Turtle House to include the rescue of tortoises and lizards. In the case of both of these species the problem has been poor nutrition, lighting etc. Turtle House would like to thank the many donors to Turtle House.
We have received several e-mails re turtle care. We are not professionals but we share our experiences in the care of turtles and reptiles... We try not to leave it to trial and error. We get advice from vets, and staff from various zoos. We also have many books on turtle care and on the internet we trust Melissa Kaplan's web site. We thank Bryan Bridgeman of Coterc for his invaluable advice. Bryan and his wife Sonja are always willing to find contacts for us re turtle and reptile care.
HELP SAVE THE WILDLIFE AND TURTLES AT STONEY CREEK Sherry Lenders with members of her community are opposing the application to amend the City of Stoney Creek Zoning by-Law ZAC 06-42. One hundred and fifty-eight species, nesting, breeding, feeding, egg laying, hibernating or migratory stop over in this area of Stoney Creek. the area is part of the Niagara Escarpment and developers are trying to build on the land. The Turtles are in need of our protection. Some are close to being extinct. As far as we know there are no housing development that are endangered in southern Ontario, even though, we wish they would migrate....

We are often asked does Turtle House have other species? Yes! Here are some of our rescues:

We are dismayed, at the number of people, who request help with their painted turtles. It is illegal to remove and/or possess native turtles in the province of Ontario. In most cases, the turtle is either sick or dying this should indicate to others that it is impossible to replicate their environment. On the other hand, if you have rescued a native injured turtle on the roadways etc. we'll be glad to direct you to facilities that will care for them.
Did you know that 80% of turtle owners are female! Crime Stoppers is a number you can call if you witness poaching, or harming of our native wildlife and our habitat.
You can remain anonymous and in some cases
The Ministry of Natural Resources is staffed
Note the Humane Society, SPCA, or Animal Control do not accept turtles. In the event, you have captured and made a pet of a native turtle it is now considered a rogue turtle and may carry disease not known to our turtles in the wild. Please, notify us, we will inquire whether this turtle should be isolated.
